I've just started testing the Open Source (free) "Calibre" eBook publishing software and thus far, it's being surprisingly effective (certainly far better than I was expecting, anyway)...

It probably doesn't have the "spit and polish" of Adobe's eBook publishing solutions - which for the record I have not used - but in comparison to the AU$1,000 price-tag of Adobe's products, you can't really go wrong!

Whether or not you use Calibre for professional publishing is a different story and I haven't used it enough to make an informed decision yet, but it's a good place to start and "test the waters" of eBook publishing...

I use Calibre too; my gentleman amigo is a writer and I'm his test reader, so Calibre's great for getting his work onto an e-reader. With places like Smashwords and Amazon, submissions are preferred as a .doc file; the formatting to other file types is done at the other end.

But I absolutely recommend Calibre anyway, even for non-writers; especially for things like converting your PDF files to EPUB.
